How is this tool related to the Growth Mindset?
This tool is connected to the one of the 4Cs of the growth mindset, specifically Creativity. Using a newer tool for doing classwork and lessons is amazing, but using technology in a whole new way is even better. Using augmented reality is completely new and allows for creativity among teachers as well as students. When teachers are creating QR codes, they can use videos, texts, websites, and many more options. When students are solving problems and work with QR codes, they can make it into a game if the teacher chooses as well as mention other ways in which to use augmented reality. In addition to Creativity, QR codes could also use Collaboration. Students could be paired up or work in small groups and solve problems using QR codes which could require jobs in the groups and communication. This tool is an excellent demonstration of the 4Cs. How can this tool be used in the classroom? As teachers, there will be many times where we will be teaching different subjects and students will need more than just a book and worksheet. This tool can help go beyond the usual book and worksheet method and incorporate technology in the classroom. When learning about different animals from around the world or a specific country, the teacher can put up QR codes around the room with links to information on specific animals. The students can be split up into small groups and go around the room with an additional worksheet to fill out as they go from QR code to QR code. This changes up the usual instruction time as well as includes interaction and teamwork form the students. What would I change about this tool? With all of the different websites that can create a QR code, to have it linked to a variety of media without charging extra. Many of the websites allow for a few different items for free, but after that there is a charge. The website, qrstuff.com, allows for quite a few media examples before charging for the code, but there is still a charge when I went to use something such as a PDF. Overall, the tool is very simple and easy to use. Other than the possible charge that could appear, I would recommend using the tool. |
What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented reality is when the teacher or students create something call a QR code and the students are able to view the attached material on their electronic devices. The augmented reality is also where students can view a computer generated world. The world looks exactly like the one that we live in, yet it is generated by a computer rather than being in the actual world. Having actual people and places be augmented, students have the opportunity to meet people and go places virtually when it may not be able to do such a thing in real life. How can teachers and students use augmented reality? To use augmented reality in the classroom, teachers will have students download a free QR code reader. After downloading the QR code reader app, the students would open the app and place the camera up against the QR code. Once the code is scanned on the app, the link will be opened and available for the students to read or watch. After the students have opened the link, then the teacher can have the students reflect upon the material presented. For teachers, the use of augmented reality is amazing! In order to create a QR code for the students, there are many different websites to use yet I recommend Qrstuff.com. On this website, you can link a Youtube video, website, plain text, and many more options. Too add a website to the code, find the website that you would like to link, copy the url, then paste the url in the blank that says "Website URL". To create a good QR code, click the next button which says "Static" under "Encoding Options". Click on "Download QR code", and you now have your own QR code for the students to scan. To add a Youtube video, you go through the same steps, except you would select "Youtube video" rather than "Website URL". This is so simple that any teacher can use it, and it is an excellent way to incorporate technology into the classroom. How can augmented reality be used in the classroom? One way that augment reality, QR codes, can be used in the classroom is by having students learn all about people from around the world. In a project that I created, the students were learning about famous people from around the world. I created fifteen QR codes that link the students directly to a video or website about a famous person from the country that the QR code is sitting on. When the students scan the code, a website describing the life and history of the famous person pops up on their phone, or a video describing the person. This was to allow for the students to gain a wider understanding of people from around the world, not only those who are in a Spanish speaking country. How does Augmented Reality work with this component, and which element is directly connected with this tool? One of the main features of Domain 3C is to bring out student engagement and involvement. Using technology in the classroom directly connects with the students growing up in this generation because they use technology almost every day. Demonstrating that technology could be used to learn about people around the world or any other activity related to class could draw out interest and engagement from the students. Also, this activity is not limited to only one student participating, rather each student can participate and have a part in the learning. In addition to QR codes fitting in with Domain 3C, there is one specific element which is directly connected with Augmented reality. The element directly connected is Instructional Materials and Resources. Teachers should be making the most of materials as well as trying something knew and using new resources. Using QR codes is something unique and new to students, when tied in with the classroom. Using these newer QR codes, teachers are using different resources rather than just a book or even just a website. The material also in the augmented reality should also be advancing students knowledge and learning which would tie in with the element as well. To summarize, this method is excellent for students to use, and gives the students a chance to use newer materials in the classroom. |
