Out of all of the elements of Danielson's framework, this has to be one of the biggest struggles that can occur in a classroom. Thankfully though, there are ways to help make this step one of the easiest with the classroom. In the paragraphs below, what the framework is as well as ways to improve managing behavior are explained.
What is component 2D of Danielson's Framework? This component of Danielson's framework is dealing with behavior management. This refers to behaviors of all kinds that can occur in the classroom. Danielson included this section into his framework for teachers to improve their classroom behavior management as well as improve the behavior management in all classrooms. Why is behavior management so important in the classroom? As a student teacher, I have had moments where I walk into a classroom and the teacher is not there. On some of those occasions, I have definitely had moments where, when walking down the hallway, I knew that the teacher was not present. I have also had moments where I absolutely did not know that the teacher was absent because the students were so well behaved. Student behavior management is important because it how our students react with the teacher is how they will react with adults and each other. The more positive teachers work towards good behavior, the more respect students will have for each other and adults. What are the elements to domain 2d? The elements to component 2D are the following:
Expectations- It should be clear what the students are expected to do and what their expected behavior should be in and around the classroom.
Monitoring of student behavior- The teacher should be attune to what is going on around the classroom even when he or she is not facing the students directly.
Response to student misbehavior- In this element, the teacher should respond in a way that he or she does not ruin the dignity or disgrace the student in any form. If the student behaves out of order, there should be questions running through the teacher's brain to try and find out why he or she is reacting in such a manner.
How can teachers incorporate this domain into the classroom? Around many websites, there are many different ideas for how to work on student's behaviors. In this section, I will mention two different ideas for managing student behavior in the classroom. One way to manage student's behavior in the classroom is to have a stoplight on the wall with student's names on a clothespin, and if the student behaves out of order, they can move to the yellow, and if absolutely necessary, they can move to red for extreme behavior. The teacher then determines the different punishments for the different colors. To make sure that you are observing the student's behavior, make sure that you are constantly walking around the classroom and watch what your students are doing. Another way to help maintain students behavior in the classroom is to have the students each have a Mason jar or a a container on each student's desk. When the students demonstrate positive behavior, the teacher then gives them a marble with a reward when the jar is filled. When the student misbehaves, the teacher then can take away marbles from the jar and depending on the extent of the behavior, the amount of marbles being taken away is then decided.
