As educators, it is important that our lessons and classroom time runs smoothly throughout the day. There are many different techniques for teachers to accomplish this, and some techniques work very well while others may not. In the following paragraphs, there will be a focus on what this domain of Danielson's Framework is, as well as classroom suggestions and key elements to this domain. Let's dig in!
What is Danielson's Domain 2C? This domain of Danielson's Framework is one in which the teacher is checking to see if he or she is making the most use out of the classroom. In this domain, the classroom should be running smoothly, while still allowing for teacher flexibility. Why is Domain 2C important? As teachers, there are moments when the classroom can seem to run itself and other moments when the classroom seems as though a tornado hit the room resulting in utter chaos. This domain's focus is to provide help teachers remember to establish routines as well as keep themselves in check for upholding those routines. Having established routines in the classroom can bring out efficiency in students and a classroom that could "run itself" without a teacher present. What are the key elements of Danielson's Domain 2C? There could be many more elements added to Domain 2C, but the key elements that Danielson would like teacher's to utilize are mentioned below along with a short description of each.
Management of Instructional Groups- In this element, the teacher uses groups for students to work together, but the teacher does not continuously guide the students. The teacher has little involvement in this element.
Management of Transitions- At the beginning of the year, the teacher should emphasize what is expected of the class during transitions. This results in less class time lost because the transitions occur smoothly.
Management of Materials and Supplies- In this key element, students know exactly how to behave and handle their materials during a lesson. When papers or items are handed out or collected, the students know exactly what to do and what is expected of them.
Performance of Non-Instructional Duties- This section includes items such as taking attendance or keeping track of behaviors during the day. This element is focused more on the teacher and there should be no instruction time lost.
How can teachers incorporate Domain 2C into the classroom? There are many different ways to establish routines in the classroom, but in the paragraph below, I will give two different ways that Domain 2C can be used in the classroom. The first way is to have a poster on the board with pictures of what the students are to do when they arrive in the morning. This serves as an easy reminder for the students what they are to do, and it saves the teacher's voice. It also serves as a reference for the teacher when the students ask what they should do next, the teacher can point the student to the poster. The second, is to have classroom assistants or give each of the students a job. This makes each of the students feel as though they have a role in the classroom, while still keeping in the routine of the classroom. At the beginning of the year, the teacher should explain the role of each job and how those student's help the teachers. This also helps the teacher give papers to one person rather than having the students all come up at once. This upholds and treasures precious time in the classroom.
